Bring your big hair and guns! It’s time for some Dallas fabric shopping, y’all!!

(SO. MANY. BUTTONS!!!!!!!!1!!!!!! OMG!!!!!!!!!) Last weekend I took a day trip to Dallas with friends for some 102 degree fabric shopping. We stopped by three shops (Super Textiles, Golden D’or and Benno’s Buttons) and would have done more had we had more time. (Susan’s fabulous cherry blossom chiffon) Now, I am not a stash person. I don’t hoard or even collect much fabric. I’m a pattern first kind of gal. I have to know what…

Dixie’s Big Fat List of Bra Suppliers and FAQ

(Don’t you just love my photoshop montage skills??? From top left: Merckwaerdign Mix4, Sewy Amelie, Elan 511, Danglez DB5, Kwik Sew 3300, Pin Up Girls Classic Bra) ****Note: In the years since I first compiled this list, lingerie sewing has exploded over the blogosphere/social media. It’s now much easier to buy kits, patterns, and supplies. Since then I’ve moved on from lingerie and haven’t kept this list as up to date as I’d like. Please leave…

Estate Sales

Like most sewers I have dreams of stumbling upon the estate sale of some master seamstress with boat loads of vintage fabric, notions and patterns and then pack up the back of my car to the brim with supplies all for one crumpled twenty dollar bill. Yeah, that hasn’t happened to me. I’ve been to a handful of estate sales and walked out with zip and while I don’t always look out for sweet estate…

Four beautiful words….

99 cent pattern sale! Unless I immediately want to make a certain pattern, I will make a note of the number and wait until the store has a 99 cent sale and then I stock up. 🙂 Most of these are more recent McCall’s released from spring and summer.I’m thinking of using some fabric from my stash to make a shirt using the 6354 pattern.

Shopping Spree

This is a first for me – I bought fabric online. I have never before done it because I like feeling the fabric before I buy. You can’t do that online but since I figure I have enough experience with knit fabrics by now I decided to give it a chance and ordered some fabric. And then because if I bought more stuff I’d get free shipping I loaded up my virtual shopping cart. Not…

Renegade Craft Fair Austin

I was out of town last year so I missed Renegade but I made sure I went this time around and I’m glad I did! It was crazy! I don’t think I’d ever seen that many artists and crafters in one place. Quite overwhelming. I walked out having spent more than I intended (maybe I’ll share my loot later, I haven’t taken pictures yet) but there was so much more I wish I bought, too!…

Dinosaur Planter – Dinosucculent

A friend and I met up for dinner last night at a hip part of town. Only when I hit traffic that I realized it was First Thursday, an event held on the first Thursday (obviously) of every month in which dozens of artisans and street musicians fill the sidewalks and parking spaces along a main thoroughfare in Austin. Cool businesses stay open late and food trailers abound. Naturally restaurants are packed and the only…

New Sewing Book

Ah! I just discovered that Wendy Mulin of Built by Wendy is publishing another sewing book – this time it’s coats and jackets. I love Wendy’s simple designs and her awesome clothing line (in fact I just bought a blazer from her website not too long ago. I love it!) and I own two of her sewing books (dresses and stretch fabrics) as well as many of her Simplicity sewing patterns. Most of the patterns…
