Tulip Sleeve Knit Dress
I woke up at 6:30 am today to drive to a friend’s house. From there several friends and I left to drive three and a half hours to Dallas for a fabric store shopping day trip. We met up with some other Austinites along with some Dallas ladies and roamed the warehouse district and beyond on the hunt for fashion fabrics we can’t find locally. We had a great time and I’ll fill you in on all of that later…
What you need to know in this post is that I slept less than 5 hours last night and these pics were taken on my friend’s street at 7:30 in the morning. The fact that I’m smiling at all is a miracle.
This dress was self drafted and I sewed it several weeks ago but never got around to photographing it.
The fabric is from the discounted section from Hancock that I bought probably a year ago. It’s a jersey print and while the fibers aren’t thick, the fabric is nice and heavy which gives the skirt a nice drape and “swing.”
I started with a t-shirt block and did a bunch of major adjustments to make it into a dress.
I tried out tulip sleeves for the first time and I think they look pretty cool. I made my fave round neckline but added a front placket and – get this – SNAPS! I bought these from snap source and I like the effect.
I added a thick waistband and a dirndl skirt using up most of my leftover fabric.
This dress is so comfy and cute that it’s been in regular rotation in my wardrobe lately.
Well, sorry for the brief update but I’m super tired and I intend to sleep for as long as humanly possible. Dixie out!!

Great dress – love those sleeves! Can’t wait to see what you found on your fabric-shopping journey. 🙂
Man that is CUTE!! You should draft a pattern and sell it to the masses!!!
Adorable! I love that crazy print! Sounds like a fun day – please let us know if you found any killer fabric stores in Dallas! I occasionally find myself in that neck of the woods and would LOVE to poke around some new fabric joints!!
Thanks! We went to Golden D’or. That’s a big one. Also, down the street are a series of smaller stores in warehouses. We went to Super Textiles. Then we also went to Benno’s Buttons which is a small button and trim store in a strip mall. It was pretty fun. If we had had more time we would have visited more stores.
It’s LOVELY!!! The sleeves in particular are fabulous. Sounds like an ace day out too, my goodness I’d love to visit your part of the world!

Thank you! and I’d love to visit london’s fabric stores, too!!
Great dress! I love the sleeves and snap placket details. This would be a must-have pattern! Please? 🙂
Thanks! I was planning on making a pattern for it. I might have to start on it earlier than I thought. 😉
