Baby Shirt v2, Kwik Sew 3730

Baby Shirt v2, Kwik Sew 3730

I swear that no less than 4 authors of blogs on my blog reader have announced pregnancies in the last couple weeks. I imagine an influx of baby clothes sewing on the blogosphere in about 6 months.

No, I’m not preggers but a cousin of mine just had a little baby boy so I made this tiny top as a gift for him.

The Fabric: Some plaid quilting cotton from The Common Thread (look at that awesome front pattern matching!!). I don’t remember the brand or designer. The piping was leftover from another project. I liked the color combo.

The pearl snaps came from a mixed set from Snap Source. I only had 5 red ones so this tiny project worked well for a tiny amount of snaps.

The Pattern: I’ve used this pattern (Kwik Sew 3730) once before for a friend who was having a baby.

The 1/4″ seam allowances amke it easy to sew the tight armhole curves and it’s quick to sew with a serger.

The Changes: Like last time I cut the back yoke and front pocket on the bias and I also cut a size M which is for 3-6 months. This baby is only 1 month old but I figure people always give parents newborn-size onesies and tiny baby clothes. He can grow into this shirt and wear it for a few months.

The Results: Baby clothes are really satisfying to sew. I used less than half a yard for this shirt and I whipped it out in a couple hours!

Question for those of you who don’t have kids – do you ever sew kids clothes for other people’s kids, like nieces and nephews and cousins? Or quilts or toys or anything else?

  • I have to agree, I love sewing children’s clothes. They’re usually really quick projects that don’t eat up a bunch of fabric, and you can fudge on fit a bit. I’ve sewn clothes for friends with children and for my niece and nephew. So lucky that I have one of each!

  • Awwww… That is adorable and I love the piping and the snaps. The very occasional sewing I do for my nephews is pretty much my *only* unselfish sewing! And even that is quite infrequent. 😉

  • That is a fantastic shirt with the details and snaps you applied. I have three children and I do enjoy sewing for them here and there (all my sewing, really, is just here and there). But I do imagine I might like sewing for other people’s kids once in a while when mine are grown because it is fun and quick(er).

  • For the past 3 years I have sewn almost every article of clothing my niece and nephew own. I Love sewing for them but I think the kids prefer toys. My sister really appreciates it. On the upside it has given me the confidence to start making my own clothes.

  • Hehe. I love tiny clothing, especially button down shirts, ties and suits for boys. I’m about to sew a dress for my niece’s first birthday. As with anything I sew for others, I’m nervous about screwing it up, even for a baby who knows no better!

    • for a baby I don’t worry about mess ups but for my older cousins (like 4 and 5) i do worry about getting the fit right. they grow so fast!

  • Super cute! I’m working on a little baby shirt right now, too– it’s so funny to me to make something so small! I love this– it’s a beautiful shirt!

  • Very cute and I have noticed that this time of year until early next year is round after round of birthday parties too. I mean there seems to be one every week or so in the kids’ class …. Something is in the air don’t you know?

  • Love those snaps!

I have sewn for my niece. I made us ponchos from the same fleece one Christmas. Mine was just 2 rectangles (sewn short side to long side), but hers was an actual pattern with a hood and a front pocket (like a hoodie sweatshirt pocket). I knew she’d love it when she kept begging to wear mine before we opened gifts.

She wore it until she could no longer get her head through the opening. It was pretty funny – looked more like a crop top than a poncho by the end.

  • Like most of you here, I made sewing baby clothes a creative outlet. It’s enjoyable and it spares me some bucks to spend on other things. 😉 I think the reason why you said it is most satisfying to make such is because the piece you’ve sewn is worn with no complaints. Haha! Unlike with teens who have very strong feelings with what they want and don’t want. Anyway, I love the polo. It’s easy to fit such a happy shade in babies. 😀
